Fall for Prairie Style

Fall for Prairie Style

Hey Modern Farmhouse Girl!

I’m sorry I wasn’t around last Saturday—I was off on an idyllic work trip for my day job! I probably could have made time to come up with a post (or I could have written something ahead of time and scheduled the post to post on Saturday)…but, I’m out of excuses. Flat out.

And I want to make a commitment to you here and now: no more excuses! I WILL write a blog post every Saturday, from here on out! You have my written (typed out) word.

Here’s a snap of me from said work trip rocking my own #prairiestyle - read on!

Yes, I have a #real day job (is that a hashtaggable word?). So, that means I’m typically busy from 9-5 Mondays through Fridays. I’m also a freelance writer on the side, so I may be typing up a storm late into the evening for the occasional project on a weeknight. And on Sundays, I aim to spend the day resting/relaxing, after going to church in the a.m.! Add on to this making as much time as possible for family and friends, regular exercise (spin classes are my new fav, thanks to you, Jolee!) and developing my cooking skills…and you can see why #thestruggleisreal. But, I’m honestly embarrassed that I’ve been irregularly blogging up until now. And, staying honest, there really is no good excuse. I was being lazy. I wasn’t making time. As the saying goes, you can always make time for what is important to you, right?

So, Saturdays will be blog days for me from now on. And Modern Farmhouse Girl, I hope you come back and visit post-Saturdays because I have SO MANY fun blog ideas in store for you! Ideally, I’ll aim to blog on Saturday mornings. I love to write with a steaming mug of coffee in reach and a yummy baked good on a nearby cake stand to keep me motivated. (I’m baking my way through Joanna’s cookbook right now! Anybody else doing that?! I just made her banana bread for a brunch I went to this morning. In my dreams it’s like a #JulieJuliaThing. Though #LucyJoanna doesn’t sound as good…).

OK, I digress! Commitment to you #made, let’s jump in to a super fun post for this Saturday! Fall fashion! Specifically, fall fashion’s trending “prairie style” which is right up a #modernfarmhousegirl’s alley. And of course, my advice it to thrift for these pieces, since we’re both on a budget here.

Wait, you haven’t heard of prairie style? Well, I hadn’t either…until last weekend when I read a trend watch piece in the Boston Globe Style section. I can’t remember their full description of “prairie style,” and I can’t find the original article via Google…but I swear I didn’t make it up and I’m patching together my own definition here, because it feels like something I just want to have a #modernfarmhousegirl #takeover with!

#PRAIRIESTYLE - a Modern Farmhouse Girl’s (loose) definition: Frilly tops, flowy and flowery jumpsuits, distressed jeans and the best fall colors like mustard and blush pink. (My boss was wearing a sweet jean Wrangler shirt the other day and that is definitely prairie style too.) Think cowgirl. Think Joanna Gaines. Think fringe. Think Little House on the Prairie (yes, I just went there. Because gingham is STILL IN!) Plus gold hoop earrings (which I’ve been wearing since 9th grade, but hey, they go with everything!) Don’t forget embroidered jeans. And leather wedges. Or Frye boots. And leather accessories like a Ma & Pembum wrap bracelet. (My fav!) Add a floppy hat. Plaid shirts. I’m also personally into a little bit of sparkle, which I’m just going to tack onto this definition of #prairiestyle. And girl, this is my OWN definition of prairie style…I think you should always feel confident taking a trend and running with it in your own direction! (So, lose the sparkle if that’s not you and add mustard colored heels or whatever you like!)

So, if you think this new style seems cool, but you don’t have a ton of cash to shell out #prairie-ing up your wardrobe, don’t worry: I’ve got you. Not with the cash (sorry, I can’t help there!) but with some inspiration. I hit up two of my favorite local thrift stores the other weekend and scored one dress, two jumpsuits, one pair of jeans plus a new pairs of shoes — all in that prairie style and all for just $65! A.K.A. why thrift shopping is totally worth it!

Here’s what I got… I hope it inspires your prairie style thrift trip! (Say that 10 times fast?)

ITEM 1: Distressed Warm Leather Shoes

IMG_2371.jpg

I got these warm-colored leather Banana Republic wedges for $11.20 (that’s with tax!) The light leather is totally #prairiestyle. And I’m sure they were over $100 originally (at least!) so this was a major score. They looked pretty new, other than the fact that the soles were torn, but I just used some Gorilla Glue (which I have on hand for random house fixes) to glue them (YES! I GLUED THESE SHOES!), let them cure for 24 hours and then used a sanding block (from when I redid my kitchen table) to sand off the residue. Not a perfect solution, but hey, for $10 shoes, I figured why not? And it worked!

Note the glue I later sanded off when it hardened poking out of the shoe…I’d say if you’re going to gorilla glue your shoes, wipe off that residue before the glue cures so you don’t need to sand them! Am I the first girl in history to take a sanding block to her shoes?! I wouldn’t put it past you, either!

ITEM 2: The SweetHeart Jean Dress

I got this adorable jean dress with lots of tiny hugs and kisses (“XOXO”) embroidered across the neck for $12.41 (with tax!) It’s actually a knee length dress so I can wear it to work. #score It also looks great with my tall yellow Frye boots for fall, but super cute with these wedges for warm days.

ITEM 3: A Flowy & Flowery Jumpsuit

I want to call this a romper, not a jumpsuit, but I just Googled the difference and apparently a “romper” ends in shorts, while a “jumpsuit” ends in pant legs. Either way, this romper was $8.40! Super discounted because the button on the front is broken, but I have a safety pin and am fairly certain I can sew a button on at some point if the pin bugs me…wish me luck!

ITEM 4: A Fall Party Jumpsuit

I’m fairly certain the girl who left the previous jumpsuit at the thrift store put this adorable piece into my outstretched arms too! Both of these jumpsuits fit me perfectly and they were hanging right next to each other on a corner rack. This one was more expensive at $18, but still for under $20 I think this is the perfect outfit—just throw on a jacket!—for fall parties/events on my calendar that call for a dressier look!

ITEM 5: That Frilly White Top

I have to thank my sweet, sweet co-worker Maria, for this! Because the cost of this top was FREE! I walked into work the other morning and she had left it on my chair as a gift. I wore it the next day and it it definitely my new favorite fall top, plus totally #prairie style! Thank you so much, Maria! xoxo

ITEM 6: Ripped Up Jeans

Well, this is really as “ripped up” as I get with jeans, and as you’ll notice these jeans have jewels sewn into them! So, totally my own take on #prairiestyle here, but I’m still loving them. Price? $14.59! They’re actually J-Lo brand jeans (yes, the singer!) in case you want to try and find some like these. I will add: the best pair of jeans I ever got were $5 bell-bottoms, dark-wash, also at a thrift store, but these are my next favorite. And just add the frilly top with my new shoes or a plaid shirt and I’m walking in #prairiestyleallday.

I hope a glimpse into my fall wardrobe was inspirational for you! And I’d love to know what you think of “prairie style” for fall (Hate it? Love it?) Or, what trend you’re all about this fall! (I heard plaid is back and that is just a whole other blog post…)
